We constantly ask this question because it seems that art is always under attack.  Why is that?

It’s because society’s values have become so screwed up.  We’re seeking value in all of these things outside of ourselves, but guess what?  Art is the antithesis of that.  Art is about going inward … it’s about mining for gold within ourselves.  Yet so many of us don’t believe there’s treasure within.  We prefer to run around and look for it outside ourselves.

And so, those of us who’ve chosen to live artful, creative lives find ourselves often at odds with this society that doesn’t value our choices.  But that’s okay.  We’re not at odds with THEM.  THEY are at odds with US.  Consequently, we sometimes find ourselves explaining art to THEM because it’s also what THEY want, but THEY don’t know enough yet to know that.

Given that, we’ll practice patience and understanding and we’ll gladly share this gift of art, No?

But I digress.  Let’s proceed.  Why is art important?

Art is important because it’s an expression and ultimately a celebration of life, who we are and what we aspire to be.  Even “dark,” “ugly” and seemingly “depressing” art is a celebration.  It’s an acknowledgement that we are alive, we are here and we are taking part in the experience of life.

This has nothing to do with money, fame, status, the rat race or any of the artificial, fake things that society chooses to worship.

Art is important because art is the real deal.  Art is important because art is life itself and life is art.

I don’t know about you, but I don’t want to spend a single day without acknowledging the gift of art because it’s the gift of life.

Art is about using insight and vision to create concrete reality.  We can create art on canvas … on paper … with clay … or through the lives we live on a daily basis.  Art reminds us that we can choose to turn our very lives into masterpieces.  Yes, we are ALL pieces of work. The first step is admitting it. No?

Turning your life into a masterpiece takes courage and commitment.  Not everyone has the balls to walk THAT talk.  Forget about trying to change the world.  If you work on making your life art, that alone will keep you quite busy.  It’s the art of living.

Art is inspiration.  Art is POWER.

That’s why art is important.  Peace.
